In 2004, with the inception of the award, 4 recipients were chosen to recieve $500 each toward their travel expenses (which must be matched by the recipient's advisor) to attend conferences or workshops where they would be presenting or actively participating. Following the initial 4 awards in the first year, the award was to be given to only one or two applicants per academic year, as selected by the award committee.

Ben Sheets (Advisor Chris Paola) to present a paper entitled, "Multi-storey Architechture and Sedimentation in an Experimental Alluvial System", at the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) meeting of Sedimentology, in Coimbra, Portugal, on September 15-17, 2004.
Lisa Tilman (Advisor Efi Foufoula-Georgiou), to present a paper entitled, "Scaling of Hydrologic Parameters of Braided Rivers", at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) fall meeting, in in San Francisco, Dec. 13-17, 2004.
