Nomination Guidelines and Rules
Each year, one award is given to a thesis completed in January 1 through December 31 of the previous year. Nominations are accepted through October of the current year.

  • The thesis should be at the Ph.D. level, must represent original work of the writer as a part of a graduate degree program, and must be in English.
  • The recipient of the award will be expected to participate in a special colloquium at the University of Minnesota.
  • The recipient will be presented with a solid silver medal and a cash award.
  • The recipient may be from any school in the world offering a recognized graduate degree program in the area of hydraulic engineering.
  • In the event no thesis is judged outstanding, no award will be given.

How to Submit a Nomination

  • We accept nominations in electronic format only.
  • Please email the nomination letter on institutional letterhead and a reference from the advisor that includes the extent of the thesis writer's original contribution and his or her biographical information to SAFLawards@umn.edu. Please use subject heading “Straub Award Nomination."
  • Please provide a link to the downloadable pdf file of the thesis you wish to submit for consideration.
  • Theses should be submitted by the graduate student's department head. Only one thesis should be submitted from each University. The submission of the thesis will be considered an endorsement of its special merit by the department faculty.
  • Email addresses, phone numbers, and mailing addresses must be current and clear so that the nominating department head and advisor can be contacted.
